Greener Living Guide

Don't Throw out...Donate!

Reducing waste is at the heart of green living, and a great way to reduce waste is by donating old items. Be a green living activist by donating old clothes and beauty accessories, as well as home items like furniture and books. This will not only help green living by being eco-friendly, it will also help your fellow human beings.

If you're not sure where to donate a particular item, try looking at the bulletin board of a local grocery store or coffee shop, or search on the internet. If all else fails, you can call you local United Way chapter and they can usually direct you to a nonprofit who would be happy to accept your donation. Donation directly helps the environment and people, green living at its best.

  • When you do spring cleaning, donate those clothes instead of throwing them out, all good for green living. Donate your old shirts, pants, dresses, and skirts. Most places do not accept undergarments, but some do accept socks in reasonably good condition. Practice green living and also donate old blankets or winter coats you no longer want.

  • Many electronic items can be donated for use or for recycling, a tenet of green living. In fact, my local Starbucks just put out a donation box for old cell phones and chargers. If you're planning to buy a newer computer or a better cellphone, keep those electronics out of the landfills and let them be used to help others. Donate electronics for green living.

  • Green living also would have us donate other household items like books and furniture. Furniture can be used in youth centers and the houses of people who need it, while books can often by sold at book fairs to raise money to support nonprofit organizations. Support green living and the community.

  • Take an afternoon to clean out your cabinets and pantry. You'll feel better organized and you can donate that old canned or boxed food you don't want, following green living.
